Modesto Irrigation District Chooses Silver Spring Networks Smart Energy Network
Silver Spring Networks partners with Landis+Gyr for Accelerated AMI deployment
Redwood City, CA, September 8, 2008 - Silver Spring Networks (SSN) announced today that it has signed an agreement to provide an advanced, two-way IP-based networking communication infrastructure in support of Modesto Irrigation District’s (MID) system-wide Smart Grid initiative. The project will support all of MID’s residential and commercial metering needs, including over 108,000 distribution points. The project will commence immediately and is expected to be completely installed and operational by the first quarter of 2009.
Under the agreement, SSN will provide the network, meters, and application and network management software. SSN’s metering partner, Landis+Gyr, will provide advanced electronic electric meters enabled with SSN’s IP-networking communications. MID has selected Landis+Gyr’s FOCUS™ AXSD meter, which will be equipped with service switches in support of the project.
“Modesto Irrigation District has a long-history of innovation in providing the highest-quality services to its customers”, said Scott Lang, President and CEO of Silver Spring Networks. “We are delighted to support this commitment by providing MID the most advanced and proven networking platform in an integrated, end-to-end solution.”
“Silver Spring Networks will allow MID to not only improve operational efficiency, but offer our customers new services for years to come,” said Tom Kimball, MID Assistant General Manager. “I believe utilities of all types and sizes will benefit from open, standards-based networking to deliver advanced automation and the capability for real-time communications with all of our customers. I am really excited that this project will be fully deployed within six months.”
“Leading U.S. utilities increasingly recognize that smart meters will form the foundation for a national, energy-efficient smart grid distribution network needed to secure, protect and conserve power supply,” said Richard Mora, President of Landis+Gyr North America. “We are pleased to partner with Silver Spring Networks in building a next generation AMI network for MID. “

About Modesto Irrigation District
The Modesto Irrigation District (MID) is a local public agency formed in 1887 under the California Water Code. MID’s first mission was delivering irrigation water from the Tuolumne River to thirsty farms. Today MID operates over 200 miles of canals and pipelines. This system serves over 3,100 growers who farm about 58,000 acres in California’s Central Valley. In 1923 MID entered the retail electric business and today provides power to over 112,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties. Since 1994 MID has delivered on average 36 million gallons per day of treated drinking water to the City of Modesto, about one-half of its annual needs. A five-member elected Board of Directors governs MID and sets water and electric rates. MID operates on a not-for-profit basis. Our goal is to provide reliable service at the lowest possible cost.
