(9 June, 2010) São Paulo, Brazil – Silver Spring Networks, a leading Smart Grid solution provider based in the U.S., today announced an expanded commitment to the Brazilian market.  Silver Spring is dedicated to helping the utilities and consumers of Brazil realize the benefits of the Smart Grid:  improved reliability, visibility and control.  In support of its efforts, the company has incorporated in Brazil, opened an office in São Paulo and hired an experienced and talented local team.  Silver Spring is collaborating with Nansen, a leader in the Brazilian energy industry, as its first Brazilian meter partner.

The Smart Grid is the energy information network that connects all devices that distribute, consume and monitor energy. Silver Spring’s proven control platform enables vast improvements in efficiency and reliability by giving utilities better control over the energy they deliver and consumers’ better control over the energy they use.

The continued modernization of Brazil’s electric infrastructure will enable utilities to deliver a more reliable power supply and empower consumers to monitor and control their energy use.  In response to strong local demand, Silver Spring is entering the Brazilian market to help local utilities meet the challenges of the country’s growing population and increasing demand for energy.  Silver Spring’s Smart Energy Platform provides instant visibility to issues on the grid, enabling utilities to more proactively identify and address outages.  Today, the Smart Energy Platform is being deployed by leading utilities in the United States and abroad.

“We are committed to working with Brazil’s leading utilities to deliver the benefits of the Smart Grid, including greater efficiency in operations and distribution and increasing consumer engagement and empowerment,” said Carlos Ramon, General Manager, Global Business Ventures, Silver Spring Networks.  “We are very pleased with the addition of Geraldo Guimaraes as Director of Business Development.  He is an experienced utility veteran and will lead our business development effort in Brazil.  We expect Geraldo and other members of our local team, together with our collaboration with Nansen, to provide the deep industry and local knowledge that will help drive the deployment of Silver Spring’s Smart Energy Platform in Brazil.”

To facilitate the implementation of the Smart Grid in Brazil, Silver Spring will work closely with Nansen, a leader in the Brazilian energy meter industry and trusted partner to many of Brazil’s 63 utilities. Silver Spring and Nansen share a common vision: to help utilities meet increasing electricity demands by deploying an open standards-based energy platform and upgrading Brazil’s electric infrastructure.

“I am confident that the collaboration between Silver Spring Networks and Nansen will create an important option for Brazilian utilities to deploy the foundational Smart Grid application, advanced metering, in a fast, safe and efficient way. We expect that the results of our collaboration with Silver Spring will also allow our customers to tackle non-technical line losses, which are a complementary driver on the decision to invest in Smart Grid in Brazil,” said Eduardo Paoliello, CEO of Nansen.
