Western Power to Deploy World-Class Smart Energy Platform in Rural Australia
Silver Spring Networks Extends Smart Grid Platform to One of the Most Isolated Grids on Earth
Redwood City, CA, March 23, 2010 - Silver Spring Networks, a leading provider of Smart Grid solutions, announced today the deployment of its Smart Energy Platform for the initial phase of a project in six Western Power service territory areas. Western Power owns and operates one of the largest, most isolated electricity networks in the world, powering more than 850,000 homes and businesses connected to the South West Interconnected Power System. Their service territory covers 322,000 square kilometers of Western Australia, including the major population center of Perth. Western Power, the lead proponent of the Perth Solar City program, is committed to deploying a Smart Grid infrastructure as part of the Australian Government’s $94 million Solar Cities program.
This rollout is an important phase in Western Power’s efforts to provide customers with the information vital to energy management and savings. It also represents a significant step towards meeting the future electricity demands of a rapidly expanding population.
Silver Spring’s unified infrastructure delivers exceptional total cost of ownership with the ability to run multiple applications over a secure IP-based network. Silver Spring will provide its Smart Energy Platform in support of Western Power’s effortsincluding training and technical support, managed services and systems integration consulting.
“We are pleased to be working with Western Power in their efforts to better serve their customers and meet the growing energy demands of their communities,” said Scott Lang, Chairman, President and CEO of Silver Spring. “This deployment shows a serious commitment to addressing energy needs both present and future.”
Silver Spring’s Smart Energy Platform will support Western Power’s implementation with a range of Smart Grid applications and devices, including in-home wireless devices that will allow customers to track the real-time cost of their energy use and Demand Response programs. Silver Spring’s Customer IQ, an interactive web portal, could enable Western Power customers to manage their energy usage securely and efficiently – from anywhere.
“Silver Spring’s technology solution provides us with a reliable, efficient and secure Smart Grid platform needed for smarter energy management and for improving reliability for our customers,” said Mark De Laeter, General Manager, Customer Services Division of Western Power. “The technology also provides us with the tools to meet rising demand while enabling customers to become full participants in building more energy efficient communities.”
