Redwood City, CA, January 21, 2008 - Silver Spring Networks announced the introduction of additional carrier-transport options, including High-Speed Cellular and WiMAX that seamlessly integrate into the Company’s advanced IP-based Smart Energy Networking solutions. These third and fourth generation (also called 3G and 4G) technologies extend new flexibility to utilities implementing Smart Grid networking solutions. Integrating 3G and 4G transports with Silver Spring Networks’ other wireless and wire line transports offers multiple options to utilities to increase operational efficiency.

Scott Lang, President and CEO of Silver Spring Networks, said that the Company’s efforts in evaluation and development of carrier technologies is central to Silver Spring’s transport agnostic architecture. “Utilities are presented with an ever increasing variety of options to support their networking needs. Not all solutions are appropriate for all customer circumstances, but with the power of our IP networking platform, utilities can choose the best in class carriers within an integrated networking architecture. Our work with emerging transports has been spearheaded by Chief Scientist George Flammer, whose 20+ years of networking excellence makes him uniquely qualified to evaluate and integrate emerging carrier technologies.”

Utilities have be barraged with carrier technology announcements over the past year, with each new offering promising to provide the ‘silver bullet’ to meeting the industry’s Smart Grid networking needs. Silver Spring Networks believes the many diverse utility applications and geographies should drive the selection of transport technologies, finding the best technical, operational and economic fit for each.

“Silver Spring Networks is committed to providing best-in-class technologies for our customers.” said George Flammer. “Utilities cannot afford to define their Smart Grid implementations by the transport they use. IP networks like today’s 3G and tomorrow’s 4G can play an important role in supporting Smart Grid applications without the risk associated with single-transport solutions.”

Silver Spring Networks will begin offering these new carrier options immediately and expects to make additional announcements regarding carrier options in the near future.
