Energy Efficiency Option Presented at EPRI’s 2007 Summer Seminar

Los Angeles, August 6, 2007 - Scott Lang, President and CEO of Silver Spring Networks, presented an innovative alternative for energy efficiency, Smart Energy Networks, at the EPRI 2007 Summer Seminar. Smart Energy Networks are IP-enabled utility networks that enable Smart Grid applications as well as make the current electrical grid considerably more efficient.

The North American transmission system, known as the “Grid,” traverses more than 200,000 miles of transmission lines and represents more than $1 trillion in assets. As the demand for electricity is expected to grow by more than 40 percent by the year 2030, an efficient grid is essential to meeting the power demands of the country and public pressure to generate more reliable, sustainable power. Distributed generation, demand response, energy storage technologies, intelligent appliances and smart home technologies will enable substantial power conservation. The challenge is getting all of these devices connected and communicating with each other and the utility via a secure network.

Technology from Silver Spring Networks, Inc. enables utility companies to create the critical networking infrastructure necessary for the new millennium and mitigates the considerable risk posed by obsolescence or proprietary solutions. We bring a new approach to utility networking while enabling practical and cost-effective “green” energy based on open standards and the robust and field-proven suite of Internet Protocols (IP). With the help of Silver Spring Networks, utilities can deploy and operate the critical network platform that will implement all of these advances, including AMI/AMR–what we call a Smart Energy Network.

Silver Spring Networks’ IP-based Smart Energy Network addresses the most formidable challenges of managing multiple applications and devices on the same network. Our Smart Energy Network is based on proven technology for addressing, routing, service quality and other management functions. With an IP-based Smart Energy Network in place, a utility can “plug and play” any IP-enabled device, deploy IP-based consumer energy portals, perform intelligent load shedding, enable remote disconnect and more. By making the grid more efficient, the US could save over $3 billion dollars annually and help to drastically reduce carbon emissions.

About Silver Spring Networks

Silver Spring Networks leverages the power of open, standards-based IP technology, to create a two-way, Smart Grid network that connects utilities with their customers. This advanced utility network provides a scalable and reliable infrastructure from the substation to the customer premise, and dramatically improves efficiency, lowers costs and ensures the reliable delivery of services. This innovative network gives your utility greater flexibility to adapt to new technologies, products, and services–and can make a substantial difference to your bottom line, too.
