Silver Spring Networks is hiring for the position of Senior Mechanical Engineer in our Redwood City, California office.

We are a venture-backed company that has gained solid traction with electric, gas and water utility companies and suppliers worldwide. Using open, standards-based networking infrastructure technologies, we build hardware and software products that extend utility companies’ networks to the customer’s location to gather and send information in real-time. This enables critical command, control, and information functions, helping our customers meet the demands of a changing business climate, without imposing on the environment by building more power plants.

What you will be doing:

In this role, you will work with hardware and manufacturing engineering, and be responsible for contributing to design and development of new and existing wireless networking products and systems.    

Essential Functions:

  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles, as well as industry and SSN requirements to design, maintain, and optimize products.
  • Achieve quality, cost, and schedule deliverables.
  • Design mechanical parts and tooling, primarily injection molded plastic enclosures for SSN networking products.
  • Some time may also be spent designing cast or sheet metal enclosures and other components.
  • Execute designs quickly in a rapid prototyping and production environment.
  • Conduct benchmarking studies and competitive analyses.
  • Oversee tooling at external tooling vendors. Provide input for manufacturing processes, field installation and analysis of field returns.
  • May lead and direct the work of others, including outside design houses, tooling vendors, and contract manufacturers.

You will operate under minimal supervision, as an individual contributor working closely with senior hardware engineers. Experienced candidates may have opportunities for project leadership of overall development projects as SSN.

This position reports to the Manager of Hardware Engineering, and may work under the technical supervision of the Senior Mechanical Engineer where necessary.

Qualifications

  • Ability to apply comprehensive knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts to the creation of new products and modification of existing SSN networking products.
  • Experience in developing and releasing products to manufacturing.
  • Expert in rapid prototyping, product testing, design for manufacturing, and design for serviceability.
  • Expert in 3D CAD systems such as ProE, Solid Works, Unigraphics, etc..
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills in order to work cooperatively on development projects, and interact effectively with both internal and external resources.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

This position requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent, and at least 5 years of experience in the field.
