Silver Spring Networks is hiring for the position of Hardware Engineer in our Redwood City, California office.

We are a venture-backed company that has gained solid traction with electric, gas and water utility companies and suppliers worldwide. Using open, standards-based networking infrastructure technologies, we build hardware and software products that extend utility companies’ networks to the customer’s location to gather and send information in real-time. This enables critical command, control, and information functions, helping our customers meet the demands of a changing business climate, without imposing on the environment by building more power plants.

What you will be doing:

In this role, you will be responsible for contributing to design and development activities on new and existing wireless and/or radio frequency (RF) systems, troubleshooting board level issues, maintaining equipment and tools, developing test tools, and working with manufacturing engineering.

Essential Functions:

  • Design of circuits and systems in the operating frequency range of DC to 6 GHz
  • Strong background with data communications
  • Experience with mixed analog / digital designs
  • Designs with RF discrete components as well as amplifiers, LNAs, synthesizers, filters, transmission lines modelling, and antennas
  • Experience with Orcad schematic entry and PADS layout software
  • Board Layout design
  • Developing and releasing products to manufacturing
  • Assist other engineers in troubleshooting and analyzing board level issues
  • Work cooperatively on development projects

This will include experience with manufacturing methods, emissions testing, regulatory and all steps necessary for a successful launch to manufacturing.

You will operate under minimal supervision, as an individual contributor working closely with senior hardware and firmware engineers.

This position reports to the Manager of Hardware Engineering and will work under the technical supervision of the Lead HW Engineer.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of design and development experience with RF products and systems
  • Ability to design digital/analog/RF circuits
  • Ability to analyze, test and debug digital/analog/RF circuits
  • Hands-on experience working with RF products
  • Knowledge of engineering and manufacturing standards
  • Ability to understand schematics and perform detailed modifications and rework to board level assemblies
  • Excellent soldering skills
  • Hands-on familiarity of any design tools (e.g., PADS, Orcad) a plus
  • Development of board-level and functional testing processes a plus
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills
  • This position requires a minimum of an Associates degree in Electronics Technology or equivalent.
